A friend gave me a Chinese fiddle in nice condition - but it was a cheap fiddle!
I thought it would be interesting to see how good I could make this sound, so I took the front off and reworked just about everything on the inside. I set it up well and the result was a splendid-sounding fiddle that looks like a cheap Chinese instrument!
It's not worth what I spent in time doing the work, but I have too many violins and want to move it on, so I'm asking a very modest £150. For this you get a cheap-looking instrument that sounds and plays a lot better than you might expect!
The experiment was interesting. I think I achieved the best sound I could have done from the violin and you can tell that some of the timber choices were budget rather than quality-driven. Nevertheless I've really enjoyed playing this violin and the surprised look on the faces of other players trying it out.
It currently has a very cheap set of eBay strings and sounds pretty good with them. Upgrading to a quality set of your choice could be worth trying.
